Ashland, Wis (NNCNOW.com) -- The Ashland County board passed an ordinance on Tuesday requiring Gogebic Taconite to obtain a bulk sampling permit from the county before they begin to dig.

The measure passed the board 17-3.

The ordinance will require the mining company to obtain a permit from the Ashland County Zoning and land committee.

G-Tac will also have to pay a $10,000 permit fee.

The second part of the ordinance requires anyone engaging in nonferrous metallic mineral prospecting to obtain a conditional use permit from the county.

G–Tac officials say they will work with the county on the ordinance.

They also said bulk sampling will mostly likely happen in January or February of this next year.
