Ashland, WI (NNCNOW.com)--- After 25 years of trying, the Ashland Fire Department is finally getting a new fire hall.

The City Council approved the construction of the new three-and-a-half million dollar fire hall earlier this month.

The city reorganized its long term debt and the project will be financed without raising taxes.

Mayor Bill Whalen says a new hall is much needed.

He says the current fire hall does not have enough room to store all of the firefighting equipment, and the building itself is old and outdated.

"A town our size, being a rural community, we are actually like a regional fire department here. We're the largest, so we get called on a lot for local fires also for ambulance interchanges and we need a first class facility to work out of," said Mayor Bill Whalen.

Construction is expected to start on the new fire hall in the next six months
