Search Warrants Obtained In Babbitt Officer Shooting

BABBITT, MN (Northland's NewsCenter)---Search warrants are providing authorities more information about an officer-involved shooting in Babbitt that took place on January 24.

Babbitt Police Officer Jon Shenett shot and wounded 27-year-old Derek Nathan Klingfus as he reportedly held a 3-year-old girl hostage at knife point.

The officer-involved shooting portion of the investigation is now in the hands of the St. Louis County Attorney's office.

Officer Shenett remains on paid administrative leave.

Police reports indicate the child was stabbed in the upper left torso and on her left knee.

Officer Shenett's bullet struck Klingfus near his upper left shoulder and lodged near his spine.

Officials believe Klingfus's had talked with the child's mother and his mother shortly before the incident.

Authorities have confiscated Klingfus's cell phone and have obtained his medical records.

The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating this case with a report expected within the next three weeks.
