Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) - Barr Engineering Company plans to relocate its Duluth office to Canal Park.

Company officials say they plan to relocate to the Waterfront Plaza at 325 South Lake Avenue by spring of 2014.

The engineering and environmental firm says their staff has nearly doubled to more than 100 employees in recent years.

"We are hiring people to work for BARR, and having desks for them is an important part of that, currently we have filled all of our office space and we need more places to put people," said Sheryl Filby Williams, office coordinator for BARR.

Barr Engineering has had an office in Duluth since 1996.

The company currently leases space at 332 West Superior Street for its business office. Barr’s field office will remain at 2314 West Michigan Street.

BARR will be leasing the fifth and seventh floors of the Waterfront Plaza which will be remolded.

The seventh floor is set to start construction next week.
At–Water Real Estate will move out of their offices, currently on the fifth floor of the building by December. LW Survey Company, also on that same floor, will move out by February.

Brian Forcier, President of the Atwater Group, which helped Barr find a new location, said the company's lease of nearly 40,000 square feet in Waterfront Plaza is one of the largest commercial real estate transactions in the Twin Ports in 2013.

Along with the move includes making way for company employees to park.

"The city of Duluth had a couple of underutilized lots to the west of this building that they were able to dedicate to BARR engineering for business hours only. So the parking won't be occupied during high tourism during the summer time, in the evenings, on weekends things like that," said Forcier.

Barr has more than 700 employees, with offices in Minneapolis; Hibbing; Bismarck, North Dakota; Ann Arbor, Michigan; Jefferson City, Missouri; and Calgary, Alberta.
