Bear hunting quota increased in NW Wisconsin

August 25, 2014 Updated Aug 25, 2014 at 2:55 PM CST

Spooner, WI (NNCNOW.com) - In an effort to reduce the bear population, Wisconsin wildlife officials have increased the number of bear harvest permits in northwestern Wisconsin.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says the move is in response to a high level of bear-related complaints over the last year.

In some cases, farmers claim bears caused agricultural damage.
Officials say the 1,600 bear quota in the four county area, designated as Zone D, is the highest ever.

Wisconsin's bear hunting season opens on Wednesday, September 3rd.
