Beargrease Postponed Till March
Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com)-- A January snow melt, caused by rain has prevented the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon from starting on time.
Organizers say the event will now be held March 10th, instead of January.
Organizers say the trail is in very poor condition, especially in the southern portion of the race course, in the Duluth region.
After the race was canceled last year, organizers say they're doing everything to can make certain a race, in some form, happens in 2013.
"We are optimistic. That is all we got. We are going to forge ahead and plan it as though we will have snow in March," said Pat Olson with the Beargrease board of directors.
Last week organizers put together a contingency plan, adjusting to low snow totals.
That would have had a shortened course and fewer dogs. But even that won't work. They now plan to work toward holding a full race in March with each musher having 14 dogs.
