More people pedaling to work in bike–friendly cities

May 8, 2014 Updated May 8, 2014 at 5:39 PM CST

Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- A first of its kind Census Bureau Report has found that the number of commuters who bike to work has risen by 60 percent over the last decade.

Since 2000 that number has grown from 488,000 to about 786,000 nationwide, and has more than doubled in some of the country's biggest cities.

Minneapolis saw one of the biggest increases from 1.9 percent to 4.1 percent. The report credits the change to an increase in bike share programs, bike lanes and pedestrian–friendly streets in cities across the nation.
