Buckle Up: Extra Patrols on the Road

October 9, 2012 Updated Oct 9, 2012 at 10:42 AM CST

Extra 'Click It or Ticket' seat belt patrols will take to the roads October 12 -26 statewide, according to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.

The State Patrol is among almost 400 Minnesota agencies that is increasing patrols to encourage motorists to buckle up.

Across the U.S., over 10,000 agencies will be participating as well.

In the last three years, 377 drivers were not buckled up, showing for 43% of the total motorists deaths on Minnesota roads.

The D.P.S. says that of those killed, 41% were drivers, with age ranging from 16 - 29.

In the state, drivers and passengers in all seating positions, including the back seat, are required to wear a seatbelt or in a correct child restraint, the DPS says.

The 'Click It or Ticket' seat belt enforcement and education is a component of the state's Toward Zero Death initiative.
