Saginaw, MN (NNCNOW.com) - It's Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week and for a Northland mother it hits close to home.
Krista Darst's son, Colten Robertson, has undergone six open heart surgeries due to his congenital heart defect (CHD). Due to his condition, he spent the first seven months of his life in the hospital, his parents unable to take their newborn baby home.
Colten is now finally at home in Saginaw.
Darst says she hopes others become aware of CHD.
"With awareness comes funding and with funding comes research," said Darst, "Right now there's no known cause of congenital heart defects. There's no cure."
One in 100 babies are born with CHD.
