Two Harbors, MN (NNCNOW.com) - If you were in Two Harbors Saturday afternoon for their annual Heritage Days Festival you might have heard a sound that was a little more familiar 150 years ago.
...that blast, of course, being the sound of a '12 Pound Napoleon Cannon'.
Multiple demonstrations are happening during the festival as the Minnesota 1st Artillery Battery is outpost behind the Depot throughout the weekend.
Corporal Jason Grimm has been in the battery for 16 years and says it's a joy to bring history to life for history buffs of all ages.
Grimm says history tends to repeat itself, referencing Wisconsin state lawmaker's recent conversation about the notion of secession.
"That's something that this country fought about 150 years ago—where over 650,000 men and women gave their lives to preserve," said Grimm, "so we see that coming back into modern day, and that education we want to get out there about what caused that. What were these men fighting for? What were their lives like? What did they live like—so that we can understand those decisions and how it affects us today."
The Two Harbors Heritage festivities continue Sunday, as well as another cannon demonstration at 11:00, located behind the Depot.
