DULUTH, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) - Kids in the Youth of Duluth study ball program celebrated African American Poetry Day this afternoon, exploring culturally relevant literature.

Students, parents and community leaders picked-out poems and read them out loud to the group.

Organizers and parents say the event helps kids learn more about their history and culture.

"My poem talks about mostly like about the dreams," said Acaria Miller.

"I'm not sure that this has ever been done before for the children to learn more and more about ourselves," said Jennifer Miller, Acaria's mom.

The Youth of Duluth after school program combines basketball, healthy snacks and study time for kids.
