Aurora, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Charges against a 35–year–old Aurora woman, Karen Mykkanen, are pending after the SUV she was driving rolled over, injuring her 1-year-old and 4-year-old passengers.
The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office responded just after five Saturday evening to a one vehicle rollover on Trigstad Road near lane 50 in White Township five miles south of Aurora.
Authorities say a 35–year–old Aurora woman was apparently trying to light a cigarette when she lost control of her Jeep Grand Cherokee.
The woman's passengers included a 1–year–old Eveleth girl, Giovania Tommaro, and a 4–year–old Eveleth boy, Thomas Tommaro. Authorities say no child safety seats were inside the Jeep at the time of the crash.
All three people were rushed to Essentia Health Northern Pines Medical Center in Aurora. The 4–year–old boy was then airlifted to Essentia Health St. Mary's in Duluth. The extent of his injuries is unknown at this time.
Both the driver and the one–year–old sustained non–life threatening injuries.
The crash remains under investigation at this time. Charges will be referred to the St. Louis County Attorney for child endangerment.
