Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.COM) --- A snow bridge will be the solution for the city of Duluth to keep the Chester Bowl ski hill open for the 2013 season.

Before June's historic flood, the frozen pond acted as a natural bridge connecting skiers to the hill from the chalet.

Torrential rainfall, however, caused tons of rocks and sediment to fill the pond... and diverted the creek into a small, unfreezing channel.

Since building a fixed structure and repairing the pond were ruled out as options, the city along with the Chester Bowl Improvement Club, decided on a professionally created snow bridge.

Officials are calling it a less expensive, and safer, alternative.

The ski hill is expected to open Dec. 15.
