September 3, 2014 Updated Sep 3, 2014 at 2:32 PM CST

Chisholm, MN (NNCNOW.com) - A retired firefighter from Chisholm is the first in the Minnesota to receive new specialty license plates.

Don Haenke showed off the plates today alongside Senator David Tomassoni (DFL-Chisholm) who authored the legislation during the 2014 session.

The license plates honor retired firefighters who must have a minimum of 10 years of service.
.
Until now, only active firefighters could buy plates but would have to give them up upon retirement.

Haenke served as a firefighter for more than 21 years.
