Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com)-- Cirrus Aircraft is starting the year with a new plane, and a fresh optimism that 2013 will be a great year for the airplane manufacturer, and the city of Duluth.
From tail to nose, Cirrus's newest plane in the SR series is an attempt to make their popular planes even more popular.
"Generation 5 is the culmination of a lot of dreams of how to make the ultimate airplane," Chief Engineer at Cirrus Aircraft Paul Johnston said Friday.
Made in Duluth and with deliveries already underway all over, officials at Cirrus Aircraft are promising an improved product.
"We're making those improvements much faster the competition and that's why we're the best selling airplane," said Todd Simmons, Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Cirrus.
The big difference between the Generation 5 and its predecessor is weight capacity. This plane holds 200 more pounds, something customers were asking for and Cirrus delivered.
"It's the biggest thing our customers have been asking for," said Paul Brey, Senior Vice President of Product Development. "It's a way to put more people in the airplane and carry more payload and carry it further."
City officials are positive the expansion at Cirrus will help boost the community's overall economy.
"We're seeing now an increased interest in the general aviation market and Cirrus is poised for continued growth," said Duluth Mayor Don Ness at his office Friday.
"We have the hiring sign out right now and a lot of hiring activity in terms of engineering and designers and that kind of talent and we're actively looking for that talent right now," said Simmons.
