Duluth, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) The City of Duluth would like to hear from residents and citywide stakeholders about current and future land use for the areas surrounding college campuses.

Between 2001 and 2010, the student population in Duluth increased by 30%, making higher education a major economic driver in the city.

Because of this increase, a small area plan will be conducted by the City of Duluth Planning Division to review areas around the higher education institutions to better understand the impacts on land use, transportation, and the local economy.

The Comprehensive Land Use Plan, adopted in 2006, recognized that areas near Duluth's colleges are directly impacted by institutions such as the University of Minnesota-Duluth and the College of St. Scholastica.

The purpose of the Higher Education Small Area Plan is to balance the needs of this significant industry in Duluth with the needs of surrounding neighborhoods.

The public meeting is scheduled for Monday, July 25, 2011, at 5:00 pm in the Kirby Student Center Ballroom on the University of Minnesota Duluth campus.

City Planning staff will make a brief presentation on the planning process followed by participant discussion and input.

Parking is available in Lot E (handicapped parking is available in Lot K); a map of parking lots is available at http://www.d.umn.edu/parking/lots.html.

Parking in these lots is free during the summer.

Small Area Plans build on the goals, policies and implementation strategies in the City’s 2006 Comprehensive Land Use Plan and serve to augment the plan by providing more detailed recommendations.

The map of the area to be studied is available on the City of Duluth web site at http://www.duluthmn.gov/planning/sap/highereducation.cfm. Comments can also be submitted online.
