Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Cliffs Natural Resources, Inc. announced Thursday that its mine operations in Minnesota have received Immersive Technologies' 2012 Business Improvement Award for outstanding results in mining operator training.
The Global Business Improvement Award is the highest recognition for mining companies that use Immersive Technologies' simulators to train heavy equipment operators.
The award recognizes achievements of mine sites focused on improving operational safety, efficiency, and productivity through strategic and focused training initiatives.
Cliffs was chosen from a pool of 230 global mining operations in 33 countries.
Cliffs continues to recognize significant operational and safety improvements through the simulation technology used to train production truck and shovel operators.
Hibbing Taconite shares a simulator with United Taconite and Northshore Mining. As far as safety goes, Cliffs has used equipment at its Minnesota operations to simulate scenarios such as fires and weather-related road conditions, to prepare operators to respond appropriately during critical situations.
Cliffs was also recognized for the campany's commitment to the community through partnerships with local colleges to introduce simulators to students for heavy equipment operator training. Last year, Hibbing Taconite contributed $100,000 towards the purchase of a heavy equipment simulator for HIbbing Community College.
