Cliffs to re-open idle taconite lines along the NorthShore

October 25, 2013 Updated Oct 25, 2013 at 10:33 AM CST

Silver Bay, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Good news for Silver Bay as Cilff's Natural Resources plans to re-open two idled taconite plants in order to increase iron ore production.

Cliff's officials announced today that it will re-open two idle production lines at its Northshore Mining operations. Back in January, about 80 workers at the Silver Bay plant were laid off because of a projected drop in demand for taconite pellets in 2013.

Now, Cliff's is projecting a 10% increase in iron ore production and sales for 2014. Cliffs expects to sell between 22 to 23 million tons from its U.S. Iron Ore business, up from the 21 million to 20 million tons in 2013.

We'll have reaction from residents and workers in Silver Bay coming up on the news at 6 on KBJR 6 and Range 11.
