Dave Schlossien lives the ice angler's dream; he has his own trout pond in the backyard.

"I love it. That's why we bought the property. We just love coming out here and ice fishing. We got rainbow in here up to four pounds. They average two pounds." said Schlossien.

On Sunday, Schlossien hosted a fishing contest on his pond for the crew from Marine General.

Outdoor activities can be done in a cold snap with common sense precautions.

"You can do it safely. It's like anything. Cover up. You know, it doesn't take much. Cover your hands and ears and neck and face, you know." said Russ Francisco of Marine General.

And know your ice conditions.
The month–long cold period has helped fight slush somewhat but not completely.

"Where people have been walking and travelling, the slush is turning to ice but there's still a lot of slushy areas." said Francisco.

"If you fall through the ice during a cold snap like this, it is especially important to get out quickly.
Have ice picks around your neck and a life jacket on.
Get out quickly because even though the water is 60 degrees warmer than the air, the air is a much poorer conductor of heat than the water." said Dave Anderson.

As cold as it is, there are people who enjoy the conditions.

"I kind of like it. I prefer this to summer!" claimed Jesse Francisco on the pond.

Summer is a long way away so Russ Francisco encourages us to safely make the most of the coldest weather in years.

"It's been a decade. I've dug out clothes I haven't used in a decade so we just have to get back in the swing again." said Russ Francisco.

The Mayo Clinic recommends that those who play outdoors during arctic weather wear several layers of wind resistant clothes to ward off frost bite.
They also say to stay away from alcohol.
That causes you to cool quicker.
