Coon Rapids, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) - Lino Lakes police officer was accidentally shot and seriously wounded at a Coon Rapids gun shooting range Thursday afternoon, according to our news partner KARE 11 in the Twin Cities.
The officer, identified as 3-year veteran Chad Schirmers, was in serious but stable condition at Hennepin County Medical Center Thursday night after undergoing surgery at the hospital.
Reports say Schirmers was struck in the stomach between his belt buckle and the bottom of his bullet-proof vest, perhaps by a ricochet.
The Lino Lake Police Department was conducting a firearms training session at the Anoka County Law Enforcement Range when the accidental shooting happened.
Anoka County officials say it's unclear how the injury occurred, but there were three officers shooting at the time of the injury.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is taking part in the investigation of the accident.
