There were several notable speakers at the DECC today but it was copper nickel that stole the show.

Hundreds gathered for The Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration's annual convention. And advancements in copper– nickel mining are on the rise.

Today was the first full day of the SME convention, which acts as the principal mining conference of the year.

Speakers are focusing on advancements in iron ore, silica sand, and the long awaited progression in copper–nickel mining.

In the rocks associated with the North shore of Lake Superior what we call "The Duluth Complex," there are tremendous resourses of copper nickel and platinum and platinum and other elements," says Geologist and incoming Chair of the Minnesota Mining Society.

The jobs that would result from non – ferrous mining would provide an economic boost to the community. And Thorleifson says this reality isn't far off.

"I think that we may see production measured more in months than in years. So this is coming into focus because there is so much effort going into this by all involved."

The environmental ramifications of non–ferrous mining have been a source of concern to many Northlanders.

Lloyd Jacobs of Biotech, one of the exhibitors today, says his company is dedicated to sulfate removal from water surrounding the mines.

"Our process technologies really focus on base metal recovery or sulfate removal using ion exchange."

And, with ample networking opportunities some businesses can't stay away.

"I've been coming here for 15 years...every year we make new connections and we get big projects out of the mines we've been very blessed by being here," says Tony

The trade show component featured over 200 exhibits by mining related companies.

Today marked the SME's 86th meeting.
