Course Records Shattered During Minnesota Mile

September 9, 2013 Updated Sep 9, 2013 at 11:00 AM CDT

Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- The cooler temperatures Sunday were a relief for runners during this weekend's 7th Annual Minnesota Mile.

570 racers took to Superior Street in Duluth to put their speed to the test.

Ben Blankenship of Stillwater, MN set a new course record of 3 minutes and 52.7 seconds, claiming the first-place prize of $3,000 in the Elite Race.

Gabriele Anderson of Minneapolis, claimed the women’s division title and $3,000 with a personal-best time of 4 minutes and 21.3 seconds, which eclipsed the women’s course record by more than 14 seconds.

But as Bob Gustafson, Public Relations Director for Grandma's Marathon, says, it's a unique race for all ages and skill levels.

"It's kind of a celebration of running with a unique distance," says Gustafson. "One mile is not the most popular race, the most popular distance. But it's fun for us to put on a smaller distance event like this aside from your normal 5k's and half marathons."

250 of Sunday's finishers will be selected to receive guaranteed entries into the 2014 Grandma's half marathon.

Organizers will host one more race this year on September 21st with the Park Point 5K for Pancreatic Cancer.
