UPDATE: Identities Released in Fatal Snowmobile Accident Near Madeline Island

Bayfield, WI (NNCNOW.com) -- Authorities have released the names of the two snowmobilers who were found dead near Madeline Island in Wisconsin Thursday afternoon.

30 year old Joshua G. Reynolds of La Pointe and 38 year old Mark J. Backes of La Pointe were found dead after they were reported missing Thursday morning.

Reynolds and Backes were found Thursday afternoon after their snowmobile broke through the ice off Madeline Island.

Ashland Sheriff Mick Brennan says both men were last seen at 9:30 p.m. leaving Bayfield on the same machine. The caller stated the two men never arrived at their destination.

LaPointe Fire and EMS found a snowmobile partially submerged and one man in the water just south of Madeline Island near the South Channel.

The man was non responsive and transported to a hospital in Bayfield where he was pronounced dead.

The Bayfield Search and Rescue dive team located the second victim around 1:00 p.m. today.

Brennan says it is unknown what time the men fell into the water.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, La Pointe Police Department and the Ashland County Sheriff's Office are continuing to investigate this incident.
