Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) - Hallet Dock company will have to pay $4.7 million for damage caused to a ship five years ago, according to court records.
A federal jury handed down the decision Thursday after several weeks of trial in a Duluth courtroom.
The incident happened in January 2008 when the Walter J McCarthy Junior struck a submerged object while backing into its slip at Hallett Dock Number 8.
The object punctured a large hole in the stern of the ship, flooding the engine room with water, and sinking the boat to the bottom of the 20-foot deep water.
The American Steamship Company operates the McCarthy.
