The museum—which has been a tenant of the Depot since 1977—has experienced substantial growth in membership and visitors, prompting the move.
While the move will allow for increased space for the museums various displays and interactive learning tools, those involved with the process claim it will also benefit the Lincoln Park neighborhood.
"We see that this will also attract new people to the neighborhood, [and] also attract visitors, and help to add to jobs and the economy in the neighborhood as well," said Pamela Kramer, of the Local Initiatives Support Corporation.
The museum expects to open in the new location by no later than May 29th, 2012.
