Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) - Monday marked the change of leadership for the Duluth City Council as the community came together to welcome new councilors and bid farewell to exiting members.

This year's city council welcomes the youngest councilor elect and a council with a majority represented by women.

Councilors Patrick Boyle, Howie Hanson, Zack Filipovich and Barb Russ were officially sworn in by Saint Louis County Judge Heather Sweetland for their respective council terms beginning next week.

Councilor Hanson has been serving as the fourth-district councilor since early November when incumbent Garry Krause resigned from the position.

Outgoing councilors Dan Hartman and Jim Stauber were honored for their work on the council as they did not seek reelection, to pursue other political and professional positions.

Zack Filipovich, 23, became the youngest person elected to the Duluth City Council.

"My vision and how I want to help bring to the city council is to make sure that young people, young professionals do have a voice in Duluth, that they have a future here if they so choose to. I think I am living testament to that and I hope to help embody that in some fashion," said councilor Zack Filipovich.

"Each of them will bring different strengths to the table and I think this council has the potential to be one of the best councils we've seen in many years because of the breadth of perspectives and experiences that they bring to the table," said Duluth Mayor Don Ness.

Meanwhile, City Councilors Jim Stauber and Patrick Boyle are vying for the second district Saint Louis County board seat, left vacant by the late Steve 'O Neil last July.

That special election will be held on January 14th.

Councilor Boyle has said he will give up his position on the council if elected to the county board.

If he is elected, a special council election will be held.
