Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) -- Duluth Mayor Don Ness put on his hiking shoes on Thursday to lead a walk along the Lake Superior Hiking Trail.

The event is part of "Minnesota Hiking Celebration" put on by the North Country Trail Association, which is a non–profit that builds and maintains the North Country National Scenic Trail.

All weekend the association will be holding guided hikes throughout the city.

Organizers say this is the first event of its kind and there is no better place than Duluth to take a hike.

"Duluth is, really, a natural spot to do it. I mean, there's 40 miles of the Superior Hiking trail right in the City of Duluth, there's a bunch of fun outdoor things for people to do and there's a bunch of cultural stuff to as well. So, just a perfect spot for us to gather and celebrate hiking," said Matthew Davis, Regional Trail Coordinator for the North Country National Scenic Trail.

On Saturday there will be a Hiking and Outdoor Expo at Spirit Mountain's Grand Avenue Chalet.
