Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) -- Eight Duluth Businesses got top honors tonight for encouraging people to bike to work.

The businesses are the first in Duluth to be awarded the Bicycle Friendly Business Award.

Studies show that employees who bike to work have increased energy and productivity at work.

There is also an added benefit for businesses whose customers also ride their bikes to the store.

"National studies and statistics show us that people who bike to businesses spend more there per month than people who drive," said Shawna Mullen Eardley, Active Transportation Coordinator, Healthy Duluth Area Coalition and the Duluth YMCA.

The businesses that received an award include: the Duluth YMCA, The Ski Hut, Duluth Coffee Company, Continental Ski and Bike, Twin Ports Cyclery, Barr Engineering Co., Aerostich, and Clyde Iron received honorable mention.
