Tofte, MN (NNCNOW.com) – Ross Fraboni of Duluth, Minn., is the 2014 Beargrease Mid-distance Champion. Today Fraboni competed against his buddy Joshua Compton of Two Harbors, Minn., who finished second. Fraboni won by roughly four minutes.

“Ross and Josh are both mushers who run dogs from the Ten Squared Racing Kennel out of Two Harbors,” President of Beargrease, Jason Rice, said. “They are friends and teammates.”

But do not let their friendship fool you; the competition was at an all-time high.

“They both were definitely not wanting to give the victory to the other to be nice,” Rice said. “They were both in this race to claim the title.”

The mid-distance race is a 112 mile race along the shoreline of Lake Superior with its finish line in Tofte, Minn.

Martha Schouweiller of Irma, Wis., finished the race claiming third place. As of right now, there are about six racers left to cross the finish line.

Taking a quick look at another Beargrease race, the marathon is not quite to the halfway point. At this point Keith Aili of Ray, Minn., is leading the pack. Rice says the vets are happy with how well the dogs are handling the cold weather.

“It’s the people who are having a tougher time with the weather,” Rice said. “Very few dogs have been dropped so far.”
