Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- The League of American Bicyclists is awarding eight Duluth businesses for the first time for being bike friendly.

Silver Level award:
–Duluth Area Family YMCA
–Continental Ski and Bike
–Twin Ports Cyclery

Bronze Level award:
–Duluth Coffee Company
–Barr Engineering Co.
–Aerostich
–Ski Hut East
–Ski Hut West

Honorable mention:
–The Clyde Iron

The League of American Bicyclists say they examine four bicycling aspects of a business before designating an award:
–Education (Does the employer offer safe bicycling classes to employees?)
–Engineering (Are there showers, locker rooms and secure bike parking at the workplace?)
–Encouragement (Are there incentive programs for biking to work or discounts for customers who bike to the business?)
–Evaluation (How many employees and customers are actually biking to the business on a regular basis?)

"Businesses that promote bicycling are recognized for being green and socially responsible," the League of American Bicyclists said.

To be awarded, businesses need to participate in all four categories. There will be an awards ceremony from 4–6 p.m. on Thursday, May 29 at the Zeitgeist Atrium.
