Lac Courte Orielles, WI (Northland's NewsCenter) - The grant has been awarded to Lac Courte Oreilles Community College, and the University of Wisconsin, Superior.
It will enable both colleges to launch a collaborative program to prepare more Native American teachers, some proficient in the Ojibwe language, for the classroom, with hopes of eventually offering immersion–type courses on the culture.
According to officials, it will help Northwestern Wisconsin address a severe shortage in Native American teachers.
"...then start that continuity of students learning, going to college, learning the language, then teaching it, so then we have a sustained language emphasis," said LCO Community College President, Raymond Burns.
The grant will fund the first four years of the Lac Courte Oreilles Future Indian Teachers Project.
