Ely, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- An Ely man has smashed a world record by growing a tomato that weighs 8.41 pounds.

The Great Pumpkin Commonwealth organization sent an expert to Ely this weekend to certify the tomato, which measures 30 and a quarter inches around.

Dan MacCoy's tomato is sending shockwaves through the "Giant Vegetable Growing Community."

The old record was 7.75 pounds set in Oklahoma in 1986.

Dan says he won't be eating the record breaking tomato.

Instead the seeds will be harvested and donated to Commonwealth clubs for fundraising auctions.

You can read Dan MacCoy’s journal on BigPumpkins.com which includes photos from seed to harvest.
