Duluth/Superior, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Icebreakers had a rough time this year breaking a pathway for shipments to come in and out of the Duluth, Superior Port.
Lake Superior's ice was near–record thick this year. Shipments were down because of the thick ice, even stalling the first saltie's arrival.
During the 160 days of ice breaking operations, 5,597 extra hours of ice breaking were done on the Great Lakes this year. There are still quite a few ice chunks floating on Lake Superior, so people in boats should be cautious.
The Coast Guard still has an ice–rescue truck on standby in the case of an ice–rescue emergency situation.
