EVELETH, MN (Northland's NewsCenter)---The son of the late Senator Paul Wellstone was on the Iron Range today to help carry on his family's legacy of working to provide services for those suffering with mental illness.
The Range Mental Health Center's Wellstone Center for Recovery will open in Eveleth by the end of this month.
Eight patients, between the ages of 18 and 65, may stay at the facility for up to ten days.
Each resident will have a private room and will be able to seek medical and mental health from staff around the clock.
The building is dedicated to Senator Paul Wellstone for his dedication to organizations serving mental health and addiction.
"Reading some of the stats about mental health up here on the Iron Range, having a facility like this that is sort of an inbetween, not complete hospitalization when people need help," David Wellstone said. "This was closed down, so you've got a resource now that is going to be I think, huge. I think it's a start."
Senator Paul Wellstone and his wife Shelia died in a plane crash on the Iron Range in 2002.
The facility named in his honor will be open to patients on Aug., 29.
