Minneapolis, MN (NNCNOW.com)--- Former Babbitt Fire Chief Ryan Scharber, who pleaded guilty to two arson-related charges for setting multiple fires in the Superior National Forest, has been diagnosed as a pyromaniac.

In court documents filed Tuesday, Assistant United States Attorney Andrew Dunne argued that Scharber should be given the mandatory five year sentence

Dunne says Scharber "utterly violated the trust the public granted to him as the fire chief in Babbitt."

Scharber's attorney is seeking a downward departure from that sentence, saying his client has shown "extreme remorse".

Scharber pleaded guilty in November to one count of setting fires on U.S. forest land and one count of attempted arson on property in and affecting interstate or foreign commerce.

The 30-year-old is accused of setting nine forest fires and one attempted arson fire at Mattilla's Birch Lake Resort in Babbitt from August 20-11 through September 2012.

Scharber will be sentenced on April 10 in Duluth.
