Famed bear researcher pulls plug on bear collars

Ely, MN (NNCNOW.com) - Minnesota Black Bear Researcher Dr. Lynn Rogers and his team spent the weekend removing radio-collars from his research bears in Ely.

In his blog, Doctor Rogers said The DNR restrictions, during the last two years, coupled with the loss of key research bears, have severely limited the ability to collect scientific data.

Last month a Chief Administrative Law Judge issued a recommendation saying the DNR has the right to deny the renewal of permits for radio collaring or installing any new bear den cams.

Doctor Rogers wrote he believes the bears are safer without the collars while he awaits the DNR's decision.

"We're focusing on publishing scientific papers, writing books and making the bear center all it can be," he said.

Doctor Rogers is awaiting a final decision by the DNR.
