St. Paul, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) -- In effort to tackle the gypsy moth infestations in Northeastern Minnesota, The Minnesota Department of Agriculture will be holding two open houses for people to learn more about the effort.
The Minnesota Department of Agriculture will be holding open houses on February 28-29 in St. Louis and Carlton counties to develop plans for fighting the infestations this summer.
The gypsy moth is one of America's most destuctive tree pests and has caused millions of dollars in damage to forests.
Gypsy moth caterpillars can also deteroriate sections of forests that include oak, poplar, birch and willow.
The pests are common in Wisconsin and are now a threat to Eastern Minnesota.
The MDA has found infestations covering 145,078 acres in St. Louis and Carlton counties.
The department is now developing treatment plans for affected areas, including sites near Cloquet, Carlton, Jay Cooke State Park, Fond du Lac Reservation, Boulder Laker and Fairbanks.
Open houses on February 28th will be held at the Jay Cooke State Park River Inn Visitor Center from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. and at the Fond du Lac Cloquet Community Center from 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. on
Open houses on February 29th will be held at the Boulder Lake Environment Learning Center from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. and at the Cloquet City Council Chambers from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m.
