Superior, WI (Northland's NewsCenter) - Authorities responded to a call around two PM after smoke and flames were spotted in a field near the 7100 block of Hammond Avenue.
Upon arrival, Superior fire fighters immediately called for backup from the town of Superior fire department, as the blaze was quickly spreading to the forest's edge.
While crews were able to extinguish the fire before it spread any further, Superior Battalion Chief Scott Gordon said the outcome could have been much worse.
"If this fire had gotten to the river, there's certainly a possibility it could've jumped the river because of the 15 mile an hour wind, and then this fire could've conceivably gone all the way to the other side of town. There's less humidity now than there is normally in April, which is going to keep fire down, where as now—when you've got a wind like this—fire can move pretty quick," said Gordon.
While no cause has been determined as of yet, Superior authorities do not believe the blaze was intentional.
