Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.COM) -- Less than a month after another successful Christmas City of The North Parades, one of the founders of that Northland tradition has passed away.

Rick Pearson, a former owner of KBJR, helped to develop that event in the 1950's.

He also developed the short-lived Duluth Arena indoor snowmobile races in the 60's and live TV coverage of Grandma's Marathon in the 70's and 80's.

Pearson was a co-owner of KBJR TV and worked at the station until his retirement in 1988.

After a stint in the Navy, Pearson got a job at WEBC Radio in 1954 and shortly thereafter moved to KBJR TV.

Away from his media work, he was an avid outdoorsman in the Cotton area.

Memorial Services are to be held this summer in Duluth and will be announced at a later date.

Rick Pearson was 81.
