Superior, WI (NNCNOW.com) -- Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker approved $6.5 million in grants for harbor maintenance projects in Wisconsin on Monday.

Fraser Shipyards in Superior received about $2.9 million dollars of that money for the final phase of its three phase Dock Development program.

Another dock will allow about five ships to fit in the yard in the winter for lay-ups and make repairs. Officials say the project is part of the future.

"Currently if we have one on the dry dock we have room for four vessels, this will add an additional fifth vessel. And depending on the work we are doing and how we arrange them we can actually get three vessels and not just two on this slip area," said Tom Curelli, Director of Operations at Fraser Shipyard.

The Wisconsin harbor assistance program helps harbor communities maintain and improve waterborne commerce.
