G-Tac rethinks building mine in Ashland County

September 4, 2014 Updated Sep 4, 2014 at 7:06 PM CST

Mellen, WI (NNCNOW.com) -- Gogebic Taconite may be considering building its Iron Ore mine solely in Iron County.

G–TAC spokesperson Bob Seitz says the original plans called for mining in Iron and Ashland counties.

Seitz, however, says the Ashland County Board has not been willing to negotiate and the ordinance requires the company to pay the county too much money.

The company is still in the process of gathering data in the field and will spend the off season figuring out how the change will impact its plans.

The mine stretches across 3,200 acres of land in Ashland and Iron Counties. Only 440 acres are in Ashland county.
