Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) - A signature from Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton on a new bill means 180,000 Minnesotans will receive the help they need to pay their heating bills this winter.

The Propane Help bill, chief authored by Democratic State Senator Tom Saxhaug of Grand Rapids, was approved by the Minnesota Senate on Thursday.

On Friday, Governor Dayton signed the bill into law, making it the first piece of legislation passed during this 2014 session.

The emergency bill adds $20 million to the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program.

Propane rose from $1.55 per gallon last fall to a peak of $5 per gallon.
