Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) - Grandma's Marathon will be without a prestigious start this year due to automatic spending cuts.
The United States Air Force says it is cancelling all public event flyovers through the end of the fiscal year.
That means the 148th Fighter Wing won't be making an appearance at the start of the race as in year's past.
The Air Force says the flyovers are done at no cost to taxpayers using training hours, leaving them no choice but to cancel the events.
Grandma's Marathon officials say they're disappointed, but add they understand the situation.
"We will look forward to the day when the opportunity arises for us to renew this tradition and we will make that a priority," said Bob Gustafson, the public relations director for the race. "Until then, we will continue to support the 148th in any way possible."
