Grandma’s Marathon official schedule and traffic rules

Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- The city has laid out a schedule and traffic rules for this busy upcoming weekend.

Friday, June 20:
-21st William Irvin 5K, 6 p.m. start
Traffic rules:
-Traffic on Harbor Drive behind the DECC will be closed at 3 p.m. and at 5:30 p.m.
-Traffic will be diverted off portions of Railroad St. for the duration of the race.
-No Southbound traffic on 5th Ave. W will be allowed past the I-35 ramps, and the 5th Ave W connector to Railroad St. will be closed.
-Access to the DECC will be through the North Gate on Railroad St. Traffic should return to normal around 7:30 p.m.
-At 12 p.m. Canal Park Drive from Railroad St. to Buchanan St. will be closed for Grandma's finish line set up. This roadway will remain closed to automobile traffic until after the Grandma's Marathon Finish on Saturday, June 21.

Saturday, June 21:
-24th Annual Gary Bjorklund Half Marathon, 6:15 a.m. start
-Grandma’s Wheelchair Marathon, 7:40 a.m. start
-38th Grandma’s Marathon, 7:45 a.m. start
Traffic rules:
-Scenic Highway 61, along the lake, will be closed to traffic at 4:15 a.m. between Duluth and Two Harbors.
-Lakewood, Homestead, Ryan and McQuade Roads will be closed from the Highway 61 Expressway to Scenic Highway 61 at 4:15 a.m.
-Also, London Rd. will be closed at 6 a.m.
-Superior Street from 12th Ave. E to 5th Ave. W will be closed at 6 a.m.
-Harbor Drive, Commerce Street, Lake Place Drive and Canal Park will be closed at 6 a.m.
-Parking will not be allowed on the race course. Parking will be available at the Cabal Park Area parking, at the DECC, at the aquarium and at the Bayfront Park lots.
-During the Marathon, the only way motorists will be able to reach Park Point and the Canal Park area will be from 5th Ave. W to Railroad St. or Garfield Ave. to Railroad St. An officer there will then direct motorists along the detour route to reach the Park Point and the Canal Park area without crossing the race.
-Course traffic: Northbound traffic on I-35 will be diverted up Mesaba Ave to 2nd St.
-East bound traffic will use 2nd St. to 21st Ave. E, then south to Superior St., and continuing East. This detour will take effect at 5:45 a.m.
-West bound traffic on Superior St. will turn North onto 21st Ave. East, then continue West on 3rd St. This detour will take effect at 5:45 a.m.
-The northbound lane of I-35 will be closed at 5:45 a.m. from Mesaba Avenue to 26th Ave. E.
-The southbound lane of I-35 from 21st and 26th Avenues E will be closed
at 4:15 a.m.
-The freeway, and other roadways closed for the Marathon will reopen at 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
