Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) - A booth has now been set up along Minnesota Avenue, before the S–curve on Park Point in Duluth, where District Three constituents are being called on to sign a recall petition against a Duluth City Councilor.
The councilor at the center of the recall effort is Sharla Gardner, who covers the unique district that spans from 11th Avenue West to 15th Avenue East, and Park Point.
Supporters of the recall say Councilor Gardner has not been listening to the voices of her constituents as of late.
Betty Sola is part of the Concerned Citizens for Safety and Security for District three, and says the primary drive behind the recall effort is safety and security.
Sola says Gardner did not effectively do what needed to be done in order to keep the Park Point fire hall open, which can be a medical issue if the Aerial Lift Bridge is up.
"So, it's not just Park Pointers. I mean, you can see from all the traffic here, on a wonderful day like today in Duluth," said Sola standing near the recall booth, "people from all over Duluth are coming here. When the bridge is up, that's a very unique safety issue."
Gardner says she worked hard to keep the fire hall open, and even picketed outside the building encouraging the Mayor's administration to keep it open.
The recall effort has no deadline, and needs 586 signatures.
The last recall effort of a Duluth City Councilor was in the late 70s.
