Duluth, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) -- Knowing that Halloween night brings out hundreds of kids, the Duluth Police Department is offering tips for a safe holiday.

The department says to make sure your child's costume fits well and does not create a trip hazard. If the costume includes a wig or mask, make sure that it does not obstruct a child's view from hazards they may encounter while walking through neighborhoods.

Police say to make sure that children stick to the sidewalks when they are provided and cross at designated crosswalks. It will help to make sure children do not run out between parked cars and come into contact with motorists.

The department says to keep in mind that it is always possible that a piece of candy could have been tampered with. Parents are to make sure to inspect all candy and ensure it is safe to eat.

Emergency identification information should be placed inside clothing of small children in case of accidental separation from parents.

Lastly, parents should take children to more lit neighborhoods with familiarity with the residents and houses.

Police remind those that if you see anything suspicious, call 911.
