Hot Yoga: The Cure to the Cold Weather Blues?

Duluth, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) -- We all know how long and cold Northland winters can get.

To beat the cold weather blues, some in the Twin Ports are turning to hot yoga to turn up the heat and perhaps gain a measure of inner peace as LeAnn Wallace reports.

When it's cold outside in the Northland, it's hot inside at Evolve Duluth's hot yoga studio.

"Classes can range from 80 degrees to 103 degrees," said Jess Rossing, of Evolve Duluth.

When the studio's ceiling panels heat up, they replicate the feeling of being in the sun.

"You feel it on your face, you feel it on your back, it's like you're laying on the beach," explained Rossing.

The heat increases a person's flexibility...and originated as a way for yoga enthusiasts across the world to feel the heat and humidity of southern India.

"It is a practice to help you clear your mind, to learn how to have positive thoughts and it has helped me understand that I am in control of my life in terms of, it's not what happens to me, it's how I react," said Jessie Hetland, yoga instructor.

"For me, within this hour I can come to class and just let everything stay outside the door and I can focus on myself and being completely relaxed and present," said Rossing.

Whether you want peace of mind, a good detox, or a good stretch, those who practice hot yoga, say it offers a little something for everyone.

"Yoga is for everybody. Anyone can practice, I teach kids, all the way up to 70 year olds. There's a place for everyone," said Hetland.
