Ice Shelter Removal Date is Quickly Approaching

March 11, 2013 Updated Mar 11, 2013 at 12:33 PM CDT

(NNCNOW.com) -- The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is reminding anglers that the deadline for ice fishing shelters to be removed is quickly approaching.

The ice shelter removal date for lakes located north of Highway 2 must be removed by March 18.

Dark houses, fish houses and portable shelters must be off the ice of inland lakes no later than midnight on that day.

For Minnesota-Canada border waters, the deadline for removal is March 31.

The DNR says that enforcement action will be taken if shelters are left after the deadline.

Anglers who don't remove their shelter can be prosecuted.

Conservation officers may remove the structure and confiscate or destroy it.

The DNR also says it is unlawful to store or leave a shelter at a public access point.

After removal dates, shelters may remain on the ice between midnight and one hour before sunrise only when occupied or attended.
