Report of person submerged in frozen waters unfounded

Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) - A massive emergency response was called off Thursday afternoon following an apparent report of a person having fallen through the ice off on the bay side of Park Point.

Emergency crews staged at Sky Harbor Airport, at the end of Park Point, just before 4 p.m. after a caller said they saw someone submerged in the water.

Officials scoured an area about 250 feet out on the water, but eventually determined the report was unfounded.

Duluth Assistant Fire Chief Clint Reff says the response is a good reminder about the dangers of venturing out the ice.

"Now is the time to really stay off the ice. It's getting thinner, and the wind is constantly changing, constantly shifting, the ice in different directions. So it's best just to stay off it now," Reff said.
