International Falls, MN (NNCNOW.com) - The Kabetogama Lake Association says the lake has dropped a half–inch in the past 24 hours.

A half–inch doesn't seem like that much of a drop. But what many hope this means is that the lake level has peaked, and will only continue to go down from here.

And there's more good news in Koochiching County.

The Rainy River, which is fed by various water bodies, including Kabetogama, has dropped a foot in the past day according to the Koochiching County Sheriff's Office.

The Little Fork River is reported to be down about five to six inches since Thursday.

On Thursday Governor Mark Dayton declared a State of Emergency for 35 of the state's counties affected by record rainfall in June.

Places like International Falls have been on the front lines since last week battling the high water.

"We've been told the water can come up over the next two weeks, and even after it stops and the rivers settle down, it'll take probably another couple weeks for the waters to recede," said John Decker, of the American Red Cross, "but we're going to be in this for the long haul with everybody."

But the sandbagging and relief efforts aren't done in International Falls just yet.

The Sheriff's Office says Rainy Lake is still expected to rise anywhere from six to eight inches in the coming days. But the good news there is that it's no longer the estimated 16 inches some were expecting.

The State Department of Revenue has announced they will assist qualifying state taxpayers affected by the flooding, and severe weather.
